Partial old-age pension

Partial old-age pension offers flexibility in life, and you can start receiving it at the age of 61. The minimum age limit for those born in 1964 is 62. This pension is possible if you have not been granted any other type of earnings-related pension. Voluntary pension paid by your employer does not prevent you from receiving partial old-age pension.

How to apply for partial old-age pension

  1. Plan. Estimate the amount of your pension in our online service to support your decision. If your partial old-age pension begins before you reach your minimum retirement age, a permanent reduction for early retirement will be applied to your pension. If you retire on old-age pension after you reach your minimum retirement age, your pension will be credited with an increase for deferred retirement, and this increase is also permanent.
  2. Agree. You do not need to inform your employer about your decision to retire on partial old-age pension, but if you wish to change your working hours, you must agree on this with your employer. If you stop working altogether, resign from your job in the usual way. If you are self-employed and you change your work input in connection with drawing partial old-age pension, report the change in Varma Online Service.
  3. Apply. Fill in the electronic pension application in our online service. At the same time, if you choose our electronic service, you will receive your pension decision in your electronic archive and you will be notified when the decision is made. If you do not choose our electronic service, the decision will be sent to your home address. Partial old-age pension can start no earlier than at the beginning of the month following the month it was applied for.

Amount of partial old-age pension

With partial old-age pension, you can draw 25% or 50% of the pension you have accrued until the turn of the previous year. If your partial old-age pension begins before you reach your minimum retirement age, a permanent reduction for early retirement will be applied to the pension you draw. If your partial old-age pension begins after you reach your minimum retirement age, your pension will be credited with an increase for deferred retirement. If your partial old-age pension begins at your minimum retirement age, your pension will not be affected by either the reduction for early retirement or the increase for deferred retirement.

If you choose to draw 25% of your pension, you can draw the other 25% later on. It is not possible to switch the proportion of pension you draw from 50% to 25%, or to change the proportions in any other way. Please note that partial old-age pension cannot be cancelled after three months have passed from the date when the decision was issued.

For those born in 1964 and after, the age limit for partial old-age pension will increase

The minimum age of eligibility for partial old-age pension is currently 61. The pension can begin, at the earliest, at the start of the month following the application. Thus, it cannot be granted retroactively.

The minimum age limit for partial old-age pension will rise. The minimum age limit for those born in 1964 is 62. The age limit for those born in 1965 or after is three years before their personal minimum retirement age for old-age pension.
